This year’s Contact Festival is bringing together the best of the EDM world. We caught up with one of this year’s most talked-about electronic duos taking the stage at the festival, BONNIE X CLYDE. The pair have been making waves throughout the music scene while joining festival line ups alongside well-known EDM trailblazers Skrillex, Steve Aoki, and much more. Their music transcends the norm and brings a purpose through every beat.
Festival-goers have been buzzing over the fact BONNIE X CLYDE will be joining the line-up for this year’s Contact Festival! Given that you both have been taking over the festival scene for the past few years now, what would you say is your favourite thing about performing at festivals?
Being able to give the world our show. We spend a lot of time on our art, to express several messages through our music, and then through our performance visually. I think taking people into our world is special, for that specific amount of time we own the room. It’s up to us where we take it, and that is so special to us. We get to give an experience that they’ll remember for a lifetime. Which then leads to changing people’s lives. That is our absolute favourite thing!
What would you say is the number one thing you’ve learned since touring and performing at festivals all around the world? Is there anything, in particular, you look forward to bringing to the stage at Contact from those experiences?
The number one thing we’ve learned is that everything you do and say is important. Everywhere you go, you have the opportunity to make an impact on others’ lives. It’s up to you on how you use your time. We truly wish to show people a fantastic time and hopefully positively impact their life in some way. We travel with a purpose and always have a goal with our project. We really believe we can make a difference in people’s lives, so we are doing what we can to do so. We are excited to bring our new show with new music and visuals to Contact Festival. We are continuously writing more music and changing our project for the better and this fall we will be presenting all that at Contact Festival!
How do you compare producing and creating your music together as opposed to performing your music live?
Producing and writing our music is a very different process than performing it live, and both are satisfying in different ways. While creating, we can come up with all our ideas and bounce them off each other until we reach a really cool story and vision that can be expressed through our project the way we wish. It’s special in the studio, using instruments, coming up with concepts, and playing with vocals and all kinds of synths. It’s an extraordinary process on its own.
Whereas, performing we forget all about the process and it’s all about the feeling. Performing is where we definitely feel the freest. We get to play all of the songs we’ve worked so hard on and get to see how people react. We get to express those songs however we wish. That’s the moment we can affect lives face to face and really leave a lasting impression. The in-person experience is very special for us; we take full advantage of meeting fans and making people feel loved and hopefully they feel a part of our rose gang when they leave.
What would you say was the very first “Pinch me, I must be dreaming” moment where you realized your relentless hard work has been paying off?
The first moment was probably back in 2016 when we opened for Skrillex and started playing major festivals. Being able to get up on those big stages and perform to a large crowd is always an incredible feeling, as well as, having your idols recognize you.
What has been the most meaningful track you have released?
The most meaningful track we have released is probably ‘Bad Behavior’ at this point. It might have been ‘Rise Above’ or ‘Bass Jam’ before, but now we have a new mission with our new music. ‘Bad Behavior’ is the start of a huge story we are about to present with through our new music.
The story of how BONNIE X CLYDE came about is one of my favourites, you both started out meeting in high school and ended up creating a world-wide phenomenon based off of friendship and your shared love for music. How would you say BONNIE X CLYDE has evolved since the very beginning?
We’ve evolved in so many ways! We first started this project and didn’t know what we were going to do with our art, but we knew being motivated and sitting on a good amount of music was a great foundation to start on. Then over the past couple of years, the clarity hit us, and we knew what we were going to do with this project. We decided we wanted it to change the world, and our vision became clear. We want to make a difference through our show and our music.
After such a monumental 2019 of doing what you set out to do; making a difference with your music, do you have anything new in-store going into the new year to continue doing so? Possibly a new wave of music?
Yeah, we are going to be putting out a ton of new music which will be leading up to our grand vision and our story. The full story we are about to share with everyone.
Now back to your Contact performance, is there any particular pre-show ritual you like to do before hitting the stage?
We like to sit in silence, which is basically our low battery mode state, we love the contrast of silence vs the show we are about to experience.
What is one thing you hope the audience takes away from your performance at the end of the night?
We want them to feel that they just experienced the time of their lives.
