Chinese New Year marks the end of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar and is considered to be a major holiday for all of China and anywhere there is a significant Chinese population. While the 44th annual Chinese New Year Parade happens just outside of our doors on Sunday, January 29th, the Fortune Sound Club Special Projects space will be open for a special art show presented by District Local titled, Get Lucky.
In celebration of the year of the Fire Rooster, District Local invited a select number of local artists to create artwork on red lucky envelopes with the freedom to use their media of choice. Over the past few years, District Local has been able to develop a great online community based on the happenings of Vancouver’s local culture and community.
“Get Lucky is the first art event we’ve produced, and we chose this particular theme and location to align with a bigger conversation. As the landscape of Chinatown rapidly changes, it’s part of an ongoing discussion for us and many others to activate community participation in the neighbourhood in creative and meaningful ways. By working with organizations that represent or serve different groups in the community, we’ve poured our hearts into producing this community-oriented, culturally-relevant event with the hope to facilitate the desire for open dialogue and relationships – bridge connections between new and old. We’re looking forward to bringing together local artists, friends and family, community members and partners around an iconic cultural celebration.”
