Dimming the Shine – We Say Goodbye to a Gastown Original

Dimming the Shine – We Say Goodbye to a Gastown Original

On September 27th, after 14 influential years, Blueprint will be closing the doors to the iconic Gastown nightclub; Shine.

A melting pot of DJs, artists, producers, trendsetters and club kids of all stripes, Shine proudly hosted everything from LGBT-friendly Sundays to dirty dancehall, retro nights, house, rap, grime, techno and big sexy funk. The club boasted an array of music, styles and personalities never before seen in Vancouver. As the go-to destination for the city’s music-forward club-goers, the intimate room was a home for many local artists who went on to international acclaim.

Located in the heart of Gastown, Shine has been a Vancouver favourite in the nightlife scene for over a decade. For one of the smaller venues in the area, Shine has brought in some of the world’s most renowned talent in the industry – resulting in every night being packed full of energy, music-heads and dancing fans.

Shine came under the Blueprint umbrella in October of 2012, taking over the venue from Tim Knight, original owner of Shine. Knight reminisces on some of the most epic times at Shine, from hanging out with Raekwon from Wu-Tang clan, attending the legendary 80’s nights and hosting “Small Club, Big DJ’ night with DEEP DISH, as some of his favorite memories.

Amongst the amazing talent that have performed at the nightclub over the years, many of our very own Blueprint family started their entertainment careers or played an instrumental role in making Shine what it was and what it is today. From Blueprint’s co-founder, Alvaro Prol, who kick-started Karma Fridays in 2000, to Carlo Giusto, now the Director of Blueprint’s LIVE division, who has been a partner in the venue since 2009. Our Director of Marketing, Nate Sabine, and Director of Concerts, Dan Wurtele, pioneered White Lies 80’s night on Thursdays and Blueprint’s Fortune Sound Club partners, Gman & Rizk were originally partners with Tim Knight for Shine’s earliest years.

Much of Shine’s legacy will live on through the talent and people that got its start at the nightclub, but more importantly Shine could not have been what it is today without the undying support of Vancouver’s club-goers. It is truly an end of an era, and we could not be more thankful for all of the support over the last decade, which has made Shine a true Gastown original and icon.

Looking forward, we’ll never forget all the memories created at Shine, but we are excited for what’s next to come in the Shine space and we can’t wait to share it with you all…!

To bid adieu to the iconic Gastown nightclub, on September 27th iShine Saturdays with Soulgood Events will be sending the club off in style, with DJs Icy Touch, Lokoboy, Relik and guests.
