Northern Lights Festival Is Back with Its Biggest Lineup Ever
The start of a new year can mean a lot of different things for different people. Some people see it as a fresh start, a time to reevaluate life and make resolutions for the year ahead. For others it might simply mean that the earth as completed another trip around the sun, which is just fine too. But for us here at Blueprint, it means another year of amazing events — in Western Canada and beyond! Having just celebrated our 18th anniversary, we’re ready to make it the best year ever, and are happy to be kicking it off right with our latest event.
We’re partnering up with Live Nation Canada and Heineken to bring the 4th annual Northern Lights Music Festival to the Shaw Conference Centre for a massive arena show that will be powered by 150,000 watts of sound. Last year we had patrons travel from all over Canada, the United States and even as far Romania come to party with us, and this year we’re expecting much of the same. And if you’re one of the 11,000 in attendance in attendance, you’re in for a huge treat because this lineup is something else.
Happening over the course of Friday March 25 and Saturday March 26 (Easter Long Weekend), Northern Lights will welcome some of the biggest artists in the world, the first of which is ODESZA. This indietronic/electropop duo from Seattle —made up of CatacombKid and BeachesBeaches — burst onto the scene in 2012 with their debut album, Summer’s Gone, which was released to widespread acclaim in the electronic music community. They have since gone on to become one of the most unique acts in electronic music, and had a stellar 2015 that saw them drop a new LP, In Return (Deluxe Edition), that featured live recordings and a horn section, as well as a collaborative track with Little Dragon.
Porter Robinson might only be 23 years old, but he’s already had an amazing career thus far. Known for his versatility, he’s already clocked multiple number one singles across a variety of genres, as well as making official remixes for artists like Avicii and Lady Gaga. You’ll have the unique opportunity of seeing Robinson perform his much-acclaimed “live” set versus just a traditional DJ set, where you can see him build his tracks live on stage by triggering samples, playing MIDI controllers and singing.
Hailing from greater London England, Duke Dumont is a Grammy-nominated producer and DJ, and one of the biggest stars in the deep and tech house worlds. His singles “Need U (100%),” “I Got U” and “Won’t Look Back” have garnered him international acclaim, and like his productions, his DJ sets perfectly balance hard-hitting beats with soulful vocals to keep you grooving all night.
RL Grime is perhaps one of the most well known crossover artists of the present day. In addition to his own productions that span the genres of big-room trap, grime and Dutch house, the man born Henry Steinway is also noted for producing remixes for everyone from Benny Benassi to Chief Keef to Shlohmo. He’s also produced tracks for Tory Lanez, Big Sean and Pitbull. You never know what to expect from an RL Grime set, except that it will be crazy energetic with vibes on a hundred! Oh, and there will be bass. Lots of it.
Thomas Jack might look like he belongs on a surfboard more than behind a set of decks but this Miami native can seriously hold his own when it comes to rocking a party. His set will pack a serious (Hawaiian?) punch of tropical, feel good vibes.
Keys N Krates are one of the most unique electronic acts out there, and are credited with being the first group that brought electronic instrumentation to life, the world’s first “trap band” if you will. The Toronto natives have played every big festival you can imagine including Lollapalooza, Electric Zoo, Ultra Music Festival, Bumbershoot, Osheaga, and Sonar, and have an incredible high-energy stage show that you have to see to believe. When you see them grace the Northern Lights stage, remember that what you are seeing is being created using only drums, a keyboard, a set of turntables and some samples. Prepare to be amazed!
SNBRN might be fairly new to the scene, but the Los Angeles native (real name Kevin Chapman) has quickly rose through the ranks on the back of his lush, synth-heavy brand of neo-house music which will make you feel like you’re dancing with your friends on the beach at 5pm. With that in mind, it’s easy to understand why his production alias is derived from the word “sunburn.” He’s topped the Hypemachine charts a number of times over the last year, and we’re happy to welcome him back to Edmonton for Northern Lights.
Mija is another one of dance music’s rising stars that has impressively gone from a local DJ in Phoenix, Arizona to a world-traveling tour de force in less than a year. Her Cinderella story begins in 2014 with a legendary b2b set with none other than Skrillex at Bonaroo. Fast-forward to present day and this young lady is signed to OWSLA and traveling the world, winning fans over with her high-energy, wobble-heavy sound.
Gryffin is a man of many talents. Not only has Dan Gryffin racked up millions of plays on official remixes for Tove Lo and Maroon 5, the young New York native is also a classically trained pianist and guitarist. He’s been working on a live set that’s had him sidelined from DJing for some time, but he’s coming off the bench to grace the Northern Lights crowd with a set that will surely be chock-full of his brand of soulful dance music.
And rounding out the lineup is some more homegrown Canadian talent — Ekali. This Vancouver native was Canada’s sole representative at Red Bull’s famed Music Academy in Tokyo in 2014, and since then has been on a steady rise in the world of electronic production. With over 60,000 SoundCloud followers and millions of plays, Ekali’s soulful brand of future bass has garnered a loyal fan base worldwide. Come and see what the hype is all about!
As you can see, we pulled out all the stops with this lineup! This is an absolutely humongous show that is sure to be one of the biggest of the year, so grab yours via northernlightsmusicfestival.com We’re looking forward to seeing you all on Easter Weekend for Northern Lights 2016!get tickets
