Pacific Rhythm Picks from DJ D.DEE

For those of you in the know, it’s been well established that Vancouver’s has one of the healthiest underground dance music scenes in the world. If you’re not in the know, well we’re here to help! Tonight at M.I.A. we welcome two of our city’s premiere selectors for a gathering of minds and souls called Tar Disc. First up is Liam Butler, member of the duo Pender Street Steppers who also heads up the world renowned Mood Hut imprint and then Derek Duncan otherwise known as DJ D.DEE, who heads up Pacific Rhythm which is both a thriving record store located in Chinatown & a record imprint which saw its first record released to critical acclaim last year. Both of these dynamic DJs embody the spirit of the “Canadian Riviera” (code for Vancouver) and have been exporting our unique strains & flavours of House, Techno & Vintage Disco/Funk around the world for the past few years. 2015 will see them and their cohorts rise to even more prominence on the global stage, so we suggest getting with the program if you haven’t yet!

In celebration of tonight’s gathering, we sat down with Mr. D.DEE for his Top 5 record picks currently located within the Pacific Rhythm store located conveniently at 441 Gore Ave:

Rasa –  Questions In My Mind

The first non chanting Hare Krishna record ever produced according the WWW. A sealed copy ended up in the shop recently, I can’t wait for the right person to take it home and feel the same way I did when I heard “Questions In My Mind” for the first time.

Pender Street Steppers – The Glass City / Golden Garden

An instant classic from the home zone. S/O to Golden Garden!

Loi – When I Feel The Need

Essential CANCON (Canadian content) that recently received the reissue treatment via a label called Music Gallery out of Italy. Both sides are insane but When I Feel The Need is the absolute JAM.

Theo Parrish – Chemistry

This track should serve as the blueprint for any bedroom producer interested in dabbling with contemporary or “futuristic” RNB. It hits me straight in the gut every time I hear it and seldom leaves my head. Anytime somebody asks me for a recommendation in the shop this is the first record I hand to them.

Mark Grusane – MGM Edits Vol. 1

3 essential edits from Chicago’s original bad boy, Mark Grusane. You can straight up set it and forget it with this one, this record does all the work for you.

Also be sure to check out the exclusive mix Liam & Derek put together for tonight’s gathering, it’s full of mind melting goodness essential for any social gathering outside of a nightclub:

Liam Butler & DJ D.DEE play live from the Pacific Riviera TONIGHT at M.I.A. – 350 Water St. Tickets are available at the door.
