The anticipation was at an all time high as Die Antwoord’s opening credits, shall we say, played towards a dark room. Full of dissonance, with high pitched operas and droning orchestral sounds, the audience hummed as the iconic video of Leon Botha emerged. While some might recognize him from “Enter The Ninja,” what others might not realize is that at every Die Antwoord show, his face has been immortalized – tributing each show to their dear friend.
The crowd roared at Ninja, Zef and Yolandi entered the stage, singing the ever-familiar “Fok Julle Naaiers.” Their energy spread across the crowd in waves, orchestrated by Zef and his absurdly infamous air humping followed by Yolandi’s high pitched shrills. With their blunt sex appeal, magnified in “Rich Bitch” and “I Fink U Freeky,” it’s no wonder that Die Antwoord has become figureheads for the strange and weird. Encoring with “Enter The Ninja,” the amphitheatre emerged in thunderous shouts and screams, thanking Die Antwoord for always staying true to their imaginative personas.
