To say that this Friday’s Danny Tenaglia show for the Stereotype Friday 8th year anniversary is a rarity would be an understatement — Tenaglia last graced Vancouver’s fans with an immaculate set five years ago back in 2009 & is one of Blueprint’s most coveted bookings.
Over the course of the last 30 years Tenaglia has crafted his artistry as both a masterful DJ and a world class producer. Traversing musical the veins of tribal, progressive house, 4/4 eclecticism, and techno, a Tenaglia set forgoes main stage EDM sensibilities in search of something far more abstract. His goal is straightforward, take an entire club on a personalized emotional rollercoaster: allow the audience to roll through peaks and valleys of tension and euphoria as the ebb and flow of a well-crafted set elicits a cinematic atmosphere and transport listeners deep into the depths of their own personal blissful memories.
When we asked Tenaglia what we could expect from his set at Celebrities his reply was coy: “the longer the club gives me, the more we’re really going to get into it, and the more you’re going to get.” Simply put—this Friday show up early to Celebrities and plan on staying late.. Make that until 4AM for a special 4 hour set.
Recently Tenaglia joined Steakhouse Management, home of legends John Digweed and Carl Cox, resulting in his participation in Australian-based Balance compilation series. Tenaglia’s offering, Balance 25, is his first compilation in over six years and in keeping with his almost constant pursuit of perfection Tengaglia re-edited almost every track on Balance 25’s double CD to impart his own subtle level of extra detail into every second of the albums run time. Patrons eager to gain insight into his 8th anniversary performance can be assured that Balance 25 is the perfect preview for Friday’s festivities.
Speaking to Tenaglia about his personal attachment to the dance music he holds so near and dear he had this to say regarding Balance 25:
“I still strongly believe that nothing will ever compare to the feeling you get when you pick up a record or disc, place it in your player, sit back and listen while holding on to the cover and reading the liner notes and looking at the photos. “It takes people’s minds closer to what the true spirit and nature of the project is really all about.”
A stanch dance floor activist, expect Friday night to be all about the journey: turn off your cellphones because Tenaglia will always stand up for those who are truly there to come together as one. Since his career began Tenaglia has travelled around the globe several times visiting over thirty nine countries and playing nearly every festival in the world. With so much experience under his belt he is veering away from festivals in favor of more intimate gigs:
“I’m really starting to get…not the same enjoyment out of them, it takes a whole day to get to a festival and then you get all the way there and you play 90 minutes, my attitude is that I just want to stick a bit closer to the States and Canada and play clubs. Honestly, I’d rather play a club even if it’s a lot less money than a festival.”
For Tenaglia it is all about sound quality, set duration and intimacy: “all the lights, all the bells and whistles of a main stage…I don’t even want any of that. I just don’t want to do it. The music I play, you need better sound.”
Danny Tenaglia’s fall tour dates include only 10 stops, 5 of which are in North America, and two of which are in Canada. The house music legend has finally chosen to return to Vancouver and diehard dance music fans should count their blessings because a Tenaglia set sticks with you.
Personally we at Blueprint could not think of a better way to celebrate Stereotype Fridays’ 8th anniversary then with Danny Tenaglia. Grab tickets will you still can because this house music master will sell out.
