With their debut Celebrities performance just around the corner, we got in touch with Robbie Slade of HUMANS to reveal some little-known facts about the iconic Vancouver duo. They take the stage this Sunday alongside MU, Project Pablo, Heartbeat(s), and Expendable Youth.
Blueprint: How long has HUMANS been around for? What musical projects were you involved in before?
Robbie: Peter sampled my voice and guitar for the first time in spring 2009. At that time I was in a band called Family Room and Peter was making solo electronic music as ‘Autacoid’.
How would you describe your old sound? How has it changed over the past two years and where is it heading?
Our old sound really focused on the fusion of live music and samplers. Our new sound has a lot to do with me listening to a lot more house and becoming more immersed in that music, and producing way more. The new songs are also highlighted by new gear we’re using.
Do you collect records? Which one would be your most prized possession?
All my Beatles records get played often. I bought a bunch of vinyl at Christine when I was in London last year so that stuff is special. A DJ from Victoria named Hristo gave me a 45” pressed from beeswax that would be hard to replace.
Who are some local artists that you’re in to? International ones?
I really like Pender Street Steppers, The Passenger, Paul Woolford, PBR Streetgang, Dylan KF and my favourite producer ever is probably Jamie xx.
What do you think of MU?
Brittany sent me the new MU demos and they’ve been playing non-stop while I work. Those girls have written some amazing pop songs with dark lyrics and produced the old fashioned way on nice gear. I can’t wait to see what comes of their new music.
What you think of Project Pablo & Heartbeat(s)?
I think Vancouver should be extremely proud of Project Pablo. I admit I’m biased though as I scouted him for Hybridity music and have been a massive fan of his since day 1. Everyone should go to XLR8R today because he’s taking over their newsfeed with his Michael Red remix and his own free mp3 Toothpaste. I’m looking forward to seeing both him and heartbeat(s) play. They’re both also playing at Bass Coast and I’ll be sure to catch their sets there as well. I love Heartbeat(s)’ submission for the Hybridity 2 year compilation, Cancouver.
Will you get Fritz poutine after Celebrities on Sunday?
I had a mound of fries from Bin 941 once across the street that has been haunting me. I think I need to go back for round 2.
