BP LIVE SPOTLIGHT: TENNIS

Meeting as students while in Colorado, Tennis, made up of husband-and-wife duo Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley, bought a sailboat and spent seven months sailing along the Eastern Seaboard. Post-adventure, they returned to Colorado and began recording songs that had a modern lo-fi feel while keeping a sweet ‘50s pop center. Cape Dory, the duo’s first album, was released in January of 2011 by Fat Possum. This atmospheric travel record was inspired by their time sailing and the discussions they had about music while on board their boat, the Swift Ranger.

Prior to meeting in college, Moore had been homeschooled in a fairly sheltered environment. I listened to classical music and I play piano very boring classically. I seriously had the most isolated, non-formed music taste possible until I met Patrick in college. He literally got to show me everything for the first time, like Todd Rungren, Janis Joplin I’d never listened to. I get to fall in love purely; it’s as new to me as if it came out this year. I get to experience what would be a dated history of rock ‘n’ roll in a completely fresh way. I’m actually super thankful to my parents for sheltering me so much that everything gets to be new when I’m like 26 years old.”

Since then, the band has dropped two albums, Old & Young and Ritual in Repeat, both solidifying their brand of indie pop which they have made their calling card. With the indie pop market already over saturated with bands drawing from decades passed; Tennis has stayed true to its form. From Moore’s notable delicacy in her honeyed vocals to Riley’s minimalistic style of guitar playing, everything they have created is still very light and unobtrusive.

“Our band is kind of just made up from us having completely different and almost opposing tastes in music. Like where I come from is like totally different than where Alaina comes from and because of that she’s able to see things in our music that I don’t see and vice versa.”

Tennis performs live at Fortune Sound Club on January 15th.
