A few months ago, Mackenzie Johnson (aka MAKJ) was the best DJ you had never heard of, which definitely all changed after his mind-blowing set at Contact 2013. The 23-year-old producer is being hailed as electronic’s hottest act, recently selling out our upcoming show at Celebrities on Saturday, March 1st for his Peyote Tour. With a talent so versatile, he has become a favorite of ours to book & a personality that vibes perfectly with the Vancouver scene. We decided to ask Mack a few random questions of everything in-between; Take a look below & get to know this extraordinary (& hilarious) talent:
1. So, Mackenzie, What is your favorite song from the past 5 years?
House tune, still has to be Fedde Le Grands remix of Coldplay’s “Paradise.”
Non-dance tune, Mylo – “Guilty of Love”.
2. When did you start DJing?
2006, when Italy won the World Cup, Panic! From The Disco was big, and when Tom Hanks starred in The Da Vinci Code.
3. Favorite place to perform?
If the place has a good crowd, good landscape, easy airport, good food – I’m happy. Vancouver comes close. J
4. Guilty Pleasure?
Listening to Moby and drinking white wine.
5. How did you come up with the name MAK J?
Well, my name is a girls name “MacKenzie.” So people started making fun of me in high school as normal as that sounds. So at that time of the humiliation of high school, I was a big fan of “Mac Dre.” Soon after that the name MAKJ came up.
6. Who is your favorite producer right now?
7. Favorite car you’ve ever raced?
Formula Renault in Macau China.
8. Serato or USB?
Both, when I’m playing a all House set ill stick with the USB, but I prefer Serato because it’s so much more accessible when it comes down to looking for music.
9. Favorite record you’ve ever bought?
Way too hard of a question to ask. Like saying what’s the best food you have ever had.
10. Drake or Kanye?
11. Funniest thing that’s ever happened at one of your shows?
Some girl barfed on the dance floor, and I got to witness every guy/girl dry heaving off the floor.
12. Most people you ever played in front of?
15,000 in Mexico City.
13. First feeling of being starstruck?
Sat next to Jenna Jameson on a plane one time. Knowing that girl could suck the best wiener in the game, I got al little starstruck. Same with my peter.
14. Dream collaboration?
15. I enjoy _____ drinks during each performance
