Top 5 Late Night Eats – Vancouver

Whether you’re looking to replenish calories from a night of elbowing people at the club or find yourself afflicted with a case of the late-night munchies, these five local eateries will gratify your nocturnal, suppressed urges for food that’s fast and dirty (the good kind of dirty). And hey, it’s okay, your commitment to eating strictly local, organic, vegetarian, sustainable, and carbon-neutral starts again in the morning:

1. Tsui Hang Village – You may not remember it, but you’ve probably been here. Conveniently located on the corner of Davie and Granville, Tsui Hang has long been an après-club, alcohol-absorbing mecca for late night partiers. And with a takeout window on Davie, it’s convenient, quick and affordable. 1193 Granville Street, open daily 5:00pm – 1:30am.

2. Al Basha – Amongst the pubs and bars of Kitsilano, like a sultan in his harem, sits Al Basha. Touted by many as the best shawarma in Vancouver, this neighbourhood all-star pumps out quality tzatziki, tahini and hot sauce- lathered falafel, donairs and shawarma made by the owner himself. The price is right, the food is fresh, and – best of all – it’s open until 2:30am. 3143 West Broadway, open daily 11:00am – 2:30am.

3. House of Dosas – I’ve never met a dosa I didn’t like, but House of Dosas makes truly phenomenal ones 24 hours a day. Big, crispy Indian crêpes made from rice and lentils, dosas come with your choice of over 30 types of savoury filling – and if dosas don’t do it for you, they offer a full menu of killer south Indian cuisine. The perfect place to carbo-load after a long night out (or just for the hell of it). 1391 Kingsway Street, open 24/7.

4. Pho Extreme Xe Lua – Located more or less centrally within Vancouver at Cambie and Broadway sits popular late-night pho joint Pho Extreme Xe Lua. Many haven’t yet realized that this is the reincarnation of Kim Penh Xe Lua, the garishly decorated pho place that used to reside a mere half a block away on the opposite side of the street. Open until 6:00am, this place offers comforting, protein-rich food at decent prices. Beware though: Pho Extreme is cash-only. 457 West Broadway, open 10:00am – 6:00am daily.

5. Lucy’s Eastside Diner –If traditional greasy, down-home, American diner fare is what you crave in the wee hours of the morning, Lucy’s got your back. Burgers, hot dogs, meatloaf, milkshakes (try the chocolate-peanut butter), eggs benedict, pancakes, and a variety of poutines are at your disposal at this little Main Street gem. Their Grant Marshall burger has amassed a modest, but fierce, cult following. 2708 Main Street, open 24/7.
