Board of Trade Co. exists among a handful of retailers that are breaking away from the Gastown “trend” bubble. While the shop does have doors on Carral St and further East on Union St, it seems a safe bet than owner David Lin has put some thought into the shifts taking place in the fashion-saturated area of Gastown. As a shop with many labels on the bleeding edge of style, Board of Trade is helping bring attention to neighbourhoods outside of the Waterfront area, and overall bringing a welcome addition to the retail landscape in Vancouver. Read below to hear what Board of Trade is bumping on their playlist, and a little about the future of technology.
Gastown has been a mainstay for small boutiques, how do you see nearby Chinatown developing in the next 10 years?
We have been in Chinatown for almost 3 years now, and it’s amazing to see how the neighborhood has changed and grown. There are a lot of new art galleries and businesses popping up all the time and it’s great to see a strong community of young creatives come together to build this community.
How do you see “wearable tech” developing in the future? e.g. Nike fuel band/Google glass?
I think how “wearable tech” will continue to develop in the future is highly dependent on the technology at hand, its level of practicality and how seamlessly it can integrate into our every day lives. Although, wearable tech is still heavily based on utility and creating a more practical and efficient way of living, I find that a lot of the current wearable tech has too much of a disconnect between the virtual and real. With that said, it would be interesting to see how technology will continue to integrate with fashion and the potential collaborations that could happen.
Explain how you have balanced your brand list with labels from around the world.
Balancing our brand list is a constant work in progress. Our focus has always been to bring new, fresh brands into the shop and we’re always on the hunt for new designers from all over to feature. We find these brands in many ways: during our travels, scouring the web, or sometimes even through our customers. The people we meet and the places we go to inspire us in regards to the labels we carry. So really, the world is our playground. For the most part, the designers we carry are our friends; we have a close relationship to their design process and have a vested interest in seeing them grow as individuals and designers.
