Chinatown Mall just might be the first multi-vendor streetwear marketplace you’ve never heard of. Now in it’s third season, the next location for the pop-up market is set to be Fortune Sound Club on Sunday, March 15th from 12-8PM. We sat down with market founders Jamie Gill and Liam Deery to talk about their inspirations, what they’re stoked about for this season, and what they want to achieve next with Chinatown Mall.
How were you guys first inspired to start Chinatown Mall?
Jamie: We found that there are a lot of great markets here, like Eastside Flea, but there wasn’t anything that was centered around streetwear. The original inspiration was to have the market be as big as a mall with lots of vendors, but supporting local brands instead of large companies.
Liam: Luckily there are lots of really cool Vancouver brands, some of which we never even knew about before starting Chinatown Mall, that are getting involved.
Jamie: Yeah, it’s funny because in the beginning, we struggled so much to find vendors. We only had maybe 15 vendors or something like that. But now, there’s way more people applying and supporting the event.
What are you really stoked on for this upcoming season of Chinatown Mall?
Jamie: Well, ROOM is doing a video installation for us so i’m really excited for that. They won the Telus Storyhive Challenge last year! Christine from Vancity Tribe is also doing a fashion show that’s going to be really cool and Jessica Raj will be accepting appointments for henna!
Liam: I’m also excited that we have a coffee vendor this time. A coldbrew coffee vendor called Notch Coffee; I’m really excited for that. Most of the vendors will also be showcasing new collections, and a few of them will be releasing new products at the event too.
What do you guys want to achieve with Chinatown Mall in the next few years?
Jamie: I think we just want to continue to grow and have more vendors. We want to do more cool collaborations and inspire people to support local brands. We always talked about having Chinatown Mall in another city, maybe Toronto.
Liam: We both have some friends out in Toronto who know the city really well and could help us get set up out there too.
What trends to do you see coming to Chinatown Mall for SS15?
Jamie: It’s hard to say because it’s difficult to tell what will take off and what won’t in Vancouver. Everyone’s really into demin this season. Like medium denim, ripped denim, denim everything. Less logos, less health goth, more boho but in a fresh way.
Anything else you want to say?
Jamie: Yes please come to Chinatown Mall! It’s only $2!
