Festival season is now in full force in Vancouver! From Italian Days on the Drive, to the Car Free Street Festivals, now we’re turning our sights to one of our favourite festivals that has deep roots in our Blueprint family – Greek Day on Broadway! OPA!
This Sunday, June 22 marks the 40th year for Vancouver’s Greek Day festival, an annual event attracting over 100,000 attendees across the lower mainland to Vancouver’s Greektown in the heart of Kitsilano. With June representing Greek Heritage Month, what better way to celebrate a great culture than with a variety of food and beverage vendors serving up some authentic Greek cuisine, live music, folkloric performances and Greek dancing lessons.
Established in 1974 by the Hellenic Canadian Congress of B.C., Greek Days now represents one of the largest street festivals in the city of Vancouver and is an award-winning family friendly event. Stretching from Macdonald to Blenheim Street, attendees will revel in the Greek culture and customs – from souvlaki’s to gyros, to Philhellenic Dancers and Athenian artisan treasures, from 11AM – 9PM.
There have been many influential people coming out of the Greek community, not to mention a couple of our very own, Blueprint’s co-founders, Bill and Chris Kerasiotis. Blueprint would not be where it is today without the influence and instilled passion of hospitality, culture, and entertainment, that came from their father, John Kerasiotis.
Migrating from Greece to Vancouver in 1959, John planted the family’s roots in the hospitality industry by first opening Olympia Pizza on Broadway in 1968, a staple in the city’s Greek community. Through the close and long-standing relationships his father made at Olympia, the Adelphia Group grew to encompass several bars and nightclubs. In 1999, Bill took over a larger responsibility in the business with brother Chris, which would evolve over the years to become Blueprint.
This Greek Day, Blueprint will be hosting celebrations at Colony Kits, the company’s neighbourhood bar located on Broadway and Trutch St within the midst of Vancouver’s Greek community. At Colony, we’re throwing our “Have A Greek Day!” bash between 11AM-1PM to start off the festivities with $6.50 double caesars.
We hope to see you out enjoying the Greek culture, consuming too many spanakopitas, and dancing around shouting “OPA!” this Sunday in Greektown. Don’t forget to stop by Colony and enjoy some delicious dishes!
